I believe there is a ;jewel; that needs to be replaced.....

If you find a suitable fix let me know because mine does it over 65mph....It actually jumps 15 or more...today at 70mph it pegged at "D"..not quite OverDrive on the PRNDL ind.

I once had the same problem with a 70 VW Beetle, and again with a 88 Toyota Tercel. Its as simple as removing the cable from the back of the speedo and giving it a good dose of cable lube. I used motorcycle cable lube, but I think, they make speedo cable lube look for it at the parts house.

Is this the speedo cable thats run to the transfer case and where the gear in located?
Picture 214.jpg

Where cable where bolts on to the transfer case

ok heres what I did
1. Checked the drive gear in the transfercase it was flat.
2. The gears on the end of the speedo cable were fine.

So Im guessing I should remove the cable from the speedo head and lube or replace the cable? Do the gears in the speedo head go bad? Should I lube them? So im quessing u can only lube the cable from where u disconect from speedo head?

That sounds about right lube it from the top at the speedo head end. That way the lube works its way down through the cable. If you want to replace it you go the same route just my .02 cents worth I never have replaced a cable on my Navajo so I cant help ya there.

Is there any special way to disconect the speedo cable from the head? Is there a clip or something I need to know about?

ok i have every off but does the speedo needle come off....I cant seem to remove the middle part which is the speedo???

definently keeping an eye on this thread, I've got the exact same problem... it seems to happen only at highway speeds and tends to start when going up or down hills...

Yeah heres some history info... I have to 1994 explorers both Ltd. ones a winter suv other summer.... I had the same problem with my other 94. but i had a extened warr. on it.. Its the speedo head and ford wants 600$ for it. LOL. I just sent it this one out to a place in L.A. thats fixes speedo's and the guy said this is very common... for 89$ problem fixed? the speedo head runs smooth as silk....I was told there is about 20+ gears.... So dont waste your time in trying to fix this problem its almost always in the speedo head itself.

Does it matter what kind of lube you use? My spedo cable is making a spinning noise and I was going to see if that would help instead of replacing it. Thanks in advance. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Do you have the company name phone #.

Also, what made you go with them?

I wouldn't worry about the speedo head unit.......until after I have lubed the cable and IF, that didn't fix the problem.........then I'd go on to the next thing.

To remove the cable from the top:

There is a push release connector. Push down and it releases the cable housing/sheath.

The cable is contained therein.

Sometimes the cable can be removed completely and sometimes it can't.

As for the speedo cable lube........graphite (liquid form).......I got the one from the auto parts place (ask for it). It gets squirted into the housing, it'll work it's way down. Thus, it was a good idea to start at the highest point (speedo head).

IF the cable is able to be pulled from the sheath.....why not go ahead and grease it w/high quality grease.

Reconnect it and you're done.

Aloha, Mark

PS........
Does it matter what kind of lube you use?
Yes, it does.......thus ask the parts guy for the specific lube. When I mentioned, "high quality grease".......remember, some grease will congeal........which I don't want.

As for the head unit, "lube" or taking it apart........I'll stay away from a DIY fix. But, it's your vehicle. So, do as you please.
