speedo problem

The smaller gear is usually called the pinion gear. In this case, that would be the color coded gear on the VSS. The worm gear is the drive gear. In a differential, it's called the ring gear. I don't want to confuse you, but in a differential this is the opposite. The driveshaft turns the carrier (the part which has a universal joint connected to it on the rear of the differential) which turns the pinion gear. This tapered gear turns the ring gear along with spider gears. The rear shafts connect into them with C shaped clips which turn the rear wheels.

Do you know the difference between the electric and mechanical vss? I am wondering if I got the wrong one because I have the electric t-case and I got the mechanical vss

They look exactly the same I just got the mechanical one because it was $2 more I though it might be superior.

This is a standard gear driven VSS:

This is a Hall Effect magnetic sensor without any moving parts:

I am confused how that gear is supposed to spin if it is not magnetic. Notice it is completely smooth on the inside.

I think I may have figured out my problem. I think that shaft and the inside of the drive gear are tapered and the 30mm bolt was not holding it on tight enough. I will put everything back together tomorrow and hope for the best.
