The smaller gear is usually called the pinion gear. In this case, that would be the color coded gear on the VSS. The worm gear is the drive gear. In a differential, it's called the ring gear. I don't want to confuse you, but in a differential this is the opposite. The driveshaft turns the carrier (the part which has a universal joint connected to it on the rear of the differential) which turns the pinion gear. This tapered gear turns the ring gear along with spider gears. The rear shafts connect into them with C shaped clips which turn the rear wheels.
