I have a 1997 Mountaineer V8 5.0 AWD late year production. Several months ago I replaced the transfer case. shortly after replacing the transfer case (about 100 miles) the speedometer/odometer and cruise control stopped working. I have a live gauge (ultra gauge II) that plugs in to the OBDII port and it still reads the vehicle speed. I think it is getting the vehicle speed from the sensor internal of the transmission, not the VSS that is in the tail shaft of the transfer case.

The transfer case I installed had a VSS in it so I figured it went bad. I replaced it with the original VSS, but it still does not work.

At one point about 1.5 years ago the main wire harness behind the intake plenum had chaffed against the bracket that it was supposed to be mounted to (previous owner didn't think it was necessary to mount it back on to the bracket). I was having intermittent engine cut outs until I discovered this. I repaired the wires that were chewed in to the strands, and insulated (electric tape) the ones that looked like they had only had insulation damage.

Tonight I tried installing a new ECC to see if that would fix the problem, but it didn't. Then I remembered the wire harness damage. I am thinking that maybe I missed a wire when I was repairing and it happened to break thru shortly after I replaced the transfer case.

I think I need a schematic for the wire harness in this area. I am thinking that I need the schematic that shows all of the connections to the ECC. It would be useful to have the schematics for the entire run of the VSS.

Can anyone help?

That's probably again the wiring behind your cluster or the connector to the VSS.
Try this pdf

Or this picture (less helpful):

Are you suggesting that the VSS connector needs to be replaced or are you saying that the VSS connector may not be making contact? I have looked at the connector when I replace the VSS and made sure it is in good condition. What I would really like to do is get a meter on the ECC end of the VSS wire harness and make sure I have continuity thru the harness.

I will check the connection at the instrument cluster, but honestly I do not think that would impact the function of the cruise control. It seems to me that the ECC is not getting the signal from the VSS. But I may not have an accurate grasp of how all of these systems interact/interconnect.

If someone could point me at a set of schematics and/or test procedures from the VSS to the ECC and including any of the other related schematics I would appreciate it.

I will be wheeling for the next week so after Saturday night I may not be able to reply for a week. Thanks for your efforts.

Dan
