Did a search and did not find anything helpful. My vehicle is a 96 Explorer 4x4 4.0 4door with around 151,000 miles. The problem i am having started on a trip back from Indianapolis about an hour and fifteen minute drive from home. Was driving on the interstate speed on truck showed 50 GPS 74. After that speedo was fine for a week or so. Now it will jump up to 40 or 50 mph when driving around town actually doing around 30. Have noticed it does it mainly after the Work but not before work thinking that may have to do with the outside temp.(leave for work at 5am get off at3pm) On a couple of occasions the speedometer will jump up before i even take the truck out of park.

When i does jump up like that when i am driving it takes it an abnormal amount of time for it to drop back down to zero after i stop.

I did change the gauge face about two years ago. Have had no problems after i installed that so i dont belive that has anything to do with this issue.

Was wondering if anybody has run the same problem or has heard of this happening and new a way to fix the issue.

Thanks for advice you may be able to direct at me

If it's happening even when your truck is still in park I would suspect either a problem with the gauge itself, or the speed sensor. I think I would lean more towards the speed sensor since the gauge jumps when you put the truck in gear. Off the top of my head I don't know how to test the speed sensor but there should be directions in a Haynes or Chiltons. Looks like autozone has the speed sensor (Duralast), which I believe is made by Wells, for $20 bucks.

Thanks for the advice . It does not jump when i put it into gear just when i hit the gas. Except for the few times it showed me doing 30 in park.
