So everyone was so helpful the last time I thought maybe you could help me this time.

I have a 96 Explorer and the Speedometer stopped working.. kind of. Ok, so if the car sits more than a few hours, it will work for about 10 min (sometimes more or less) worth of driving and then die. I spoke with a friend who works for Ford. He says that the sensor is good because the door locks engage and inorder for that to happpen the sensor has to relay that the vehicle is going 3 mph. So that isn't the prob... I am lost and don't know what to do next. He suggested taking apart the instrument panel but I don't even know where to begin... any suggestions?

Thank you!!!

Does your cruise still work? My speedo did the same thing but my cruise still worked. I replaced my speedo head (Instrument Cluster) all is good now.

Do you get erratic shifting on the transmission when this happens? Did you try to move the tilt wheel when it acts up? Fords have some wiring in the steering column that might cause this problem. It was in an article in Gears magazine.

I do not have any issues with shifting, abs brakes or other electrical. My cruise control works great... infact that is what keeps me from a ticket right now.. I calculate the miles per hour and then set cruise. LOL I guess you gotta use math sometimes!
