I just recently replaced the front pass. side hub on my 2000 explorer and now the speedometer does not work. I tried it with the original ABS cord and the new cord that came with the hub and neither one worked. I am frustrated with this and needing some insight into the problem. Also the check engine light is on and cannot retrieve codes. Thanks much Dustin.

I don't believe the ABS or hub has anything to do with the speedo. I think that would be a problem with a speed sensor on the transmission. if the CEL is on but you can't pull codes, you may need to use a more sophisticated scanner.

The front hubs don't calculate the cars speed. They only deal with ABS and recognize a wheel slipping.

As Koda said, the sensor in the transmission deals with speed.

Are you getting an ABS light? If not, the new hub is fine in terms of the ABS Sensor.

Actually-
98 up have the speed sensor in the rear diff ;)

You will find a speed sensor right on top of the pumkin.

Since the CEL and speed sensor issue popped up at the same time-I suggest checking all your fuses, in both fuse box locations.

Also, check if the odometer is adding miles even though speedometer is not working.

I thought the sensor in the pumpkin was just for the ABS.

98-up it is combined.

Correct! 98+ is from the diff. It then goes through the ABS module. This is why Turdle said to check fuses first. Easy check and cheap. Next can ohm out the diff sensor and see if it is open or even has a ton of crud stuck to the magnet. Do these checks first. Easy only take 10 min. Then return and report.

An example of that is my truck. I have a solid axle and no longer run front wheel speed sensors and my speedometer and odometer both work as designed. Had to adjust for the 5.13's and 37's but works as designed.

No the odometer is not adding miles. I just find it weird that i replaced the hub and the speedo quit working. Yes the ABS light is on but has been on ever since I bought the car. Last time I had codes checked when I had a miss the ABS sensor in the diff is why the ABS light is on but never affected the speedo. Thanks for all the input.
