I had to pick up some gas for the snowblower yesterday, so I filled a 5 gallon gas can and put it on the floor behind the driver's seat (left plenty of air space above the gas and thought I closed the container tightly.) After I started to drive, I smelled gas, so I pulled over, took a look and gas was pouring out of the top of the container onto the floor. I took the container out of the car and stopped the leak, but a good amount of gas already leaked onto the floor, so I put the container back in and drove home with my fingers crossed and my windows open.
At home, I used a ton of soapy water and a shop vac to soak and clean the carpet several times. This seems to have gotten much of the smell out, but this morning there is still a strong enough smell to really bother me (and make me worry).
Does anyone know of a way to completely eliminate the gas smell (other than just tossing a match back there)? Will it just evaporate away over time?
