HAVE A 96 X WITH THE 4.0 JUST STARTED GETTING A RAW GAS SMELL INSIDE CAR UPON FIRST 5 MIN OF DRIVING ANYBODY KNOW WHAT THIS IS FROM? DONT SEE ANY SIGNS OF LEAKING.

I had a ga s smell that took me 6 months to track down.

It turned out to be a tiny pin hole in the fuel linr in the front top of my SOHC.

Do you top off your tank? i was getting a gas smell inside the car for a while so i consulted my service writer he told me to stop topping off. no gas smell since.

My smell came from the fuel pressure regulator. Is there fuel anywhere on top of the intake? Not sure where ti might be on a 96.

Im not sure if the 96's had it but rangers had a recall for fuel lines on the 4.0's that were cracking and leaking . You might wanna check for a fuel line recall on your truck

Sounds like there may be a problem with your Evaporative Emmisions Cont. System.
The Haynes Manual explaines it well, much better that i can. I would get a manual and go through the checks. Could (probably) is a loose vacume hose or defective valve.
