I have a 2001 sport trac with a burnt up engine (someone didn't change the oil before mudding (son)) what years and other ford/mercury vehicles can i use for another engine, it is the 4.0 v6, sorry if i didn't read any threads im new here

As far as I know any 4.0L SOHC engine will work from '97-'10 and maybe '11 (Explorers, Mountaineers Sport Trac or Mustangs maybe some Rangers too). The 4X4's used a balance shaft that the 2WD's did not use, but that's not a deal breaker. You'll want to strip all the peripheral parts off your all engine (intake, fuel injectors, wiring, sensors) basically any pieces that are not the same as your old engine. If possible look for and used engine that you can hear run (from stone cold). I would not install a used 4.0L SOHC engine without replacing the timing chain components.

Used 4.0L SOHC engines can be expensive (the ones I see typically go for $1200-$1500) remans can be more than twice that price.

Thanks for the tip, there's a local pick n pull around me so I'll check there, is there more ways the check the engine other than turning it over by hand? They drain all the fluids too. And my sport trac has the optional 4x4 so is it still considered 4x4?

Turning the engine over my hand is no guaranty the timing chain haven't jumper. You need to do a compression test for that.

What do you mean"optional 4x4"? It either started live as a 4x4 or it didn't. In any case, you can get away w/out the balance shaft.
