I am preparing to install my "new" leather seats in my Explorer.
I was looking under the old stock, cloth, non-powered seats and see that there is a square plug attached to both seat frames on the bottom. The plugs have 2 wires going into them, and there is a cap over the plugs. Basically they are clipped onto the seat frame and don't attach to anything.
I believe they are yellow and think they are probably for a later model with side airbags. Does this sound right? I checked for voltage and get 0 with key off, but get .10 with key on.
Other than that, looks like I have to run wires for the power seats. Uggg, more work.
Is the air bag thing correct? I just want to be sure. Not sure why the plugs are on my 99, did not think they were available yet.
Thanks,
Ken

Yes, yellow is usually airbags. They're probably there because Ford thought ahead and included them in the wiring harness to save later R&D time and retooling.

Maybe not airbags like for safety. Maybe they're the lumbar support type airbags. Could be?

I believe I've seen this exact question asked before...I don't remember who else was putting in leather seats recently

for ejection seats.

Ken, I have the cloth power seats, and they are great. Much more convenient when you need to adjust them. I'm almost positive that connector is for the side airbags. I'll look under mine tonight and see if it has the same setup. I can't figure out why you get .1v on one side of it though???

I still remember the good ol' days of Mustangs and "Surge Demons". :D At that time, I was searching for an Explorer and you had just started mentioning them. Glad that we both found one. Nothing like having a "Mustang with headroom".:)

Happy Holidays.

They are for side impact air bags.

OK guys, I got it figured out. They are my non-existent side airbag wires.
Now I am trying to figure out how to wire up this darn memory seat...hopefully without the memory. Too many wires. Those EB seats would sure have been simpler!

HiYoSilver sure DOES ring a bell. I miss the stang dearly, but having a SMOOTH running Explorer has sure been nice. Glad we both did make it here!!! BTW, the surge demon still exists, it just resides in another city...far away! I heard from the buyer a couple months ago...loves the car but it still surges on him. Go figure???

Are they switched 12v?

Could be a cool spot to wire up an accessory or two..

No, since they are still wired into the air bag control unit.
Tampering into that will throw a code.
