Whilst on holiday in Dorset we had the SRS ilght (airbags) come on together with the 5 beeps on start up - but not the repeat every half hour. Light refuses to go out so I'm guessing there is a problem with the ECU behind the dash. Any got experience of replacing these - is it a SIY job given the warning about airbags in the owners manual? Where can you get them from? And - importantly - how much??

Answers may make a difference between keeping the old girl or changing (wife wants to as we currently have no heater, no low ratio 4WD, rusty rear bumper and she needs two new rear tyres).

Hi,

Well the good news is that they are easy to fit. You may want to disconnect the battery and press the brake to bleed off and residual charge. Some don't bother including myself.

There is one on ebay for £42 but I would say that is over priced. Try Chris on here first. The ebay listing states suitable for 1995-2001 Explorers but the part number changed when the '98 facelift came out so you may want to check part numbers.

My light is on but as its not an MOT fail I just ignore it. May get a replacement module if one came along very cheaply!

Check the connections under the seat

Thanks folks. Will investigate both seats and availability here. We seem to have entered into that murky part of a vehicles life when the parts start failing one after the other....
Fuel pump packed up in Jan - then we had to order new track rods and control arms from Rock for the MOT, none of them cheap when combined with shipping from the states.
Still got to try sorting out the handbrake as it's gone none-existent again. Does this fairly regularly.

Forgot to ask. Does the airbag light flash out a code before staying lit?

Just checked - it flashes on and off 5 times, pause flashed on and off two times, this is repeated 4 or 5 times - then the light comes and and stays on.

just did a quick google on ford air bag flash codes and got this on the first one i looked at

Air Bag Lights

The Air bag light will illuminate to indicate a fault with the air bag circuit. It will also flash a code to indicate which part of the circuit is at fault.

If a air bag light :

Illuminates and remains on there is a fault with the air bag module or it has lost a feed or an earth.

Flashes constantly there is a fault with the air bag clock spring.

Flashes once there is a fault with the Drivers air bag

Flashes twice there is a fault with the Passengers air bag

Flashes four times there is a fault with the seat belt pretensioners.

Flashes five times there is a fault with the drivers side air bag.

Flashes six times there is a fault with the passengers side air bag.

Tricks of the trade

If the air bag light flashes four times indicating a fault with the pretensioners, with the ignition off, disconnect the pretensioners yellow connectors which are usually positioned under or very near the seats. Wait a couple of minutes and then re-connect them. What happens is sometimes the circuit get a spike and illuminates the light, disconnecting then resets the system and the light goes out. If the light continues to flash there is probably a fault with one or both of the sensors.

I mentioned to check the plugs under the seat as i had previously read a post somewhere that said to unplug and plug em back in to see if it clears!!! I should have said that tho rather than just check :D
