The vehicle was at an idle and it died. My sister was driving it and thought it had run out of gas. We put 2.5 gal in it and tried to start it. It sounds like it does not have fuel. It is turning over fine, it actually starts, then stalls right away.

When I opened the hood last night, in the dark, I could see and feel what I thought was oil all over the components that are right in front of the driver, the relay/fuse box was all oily, the power steering pump thingie that holds the liquid actually had a puddle on top of the cap.

I didn't have a flash light so I left the truck there and went back today.

Checked the oil, it was a little low, added some. It looks like power steering fluid all over, not oil like I thought it was las night.

I thought it could be fuel filter, or pump.. dirt in the injectors if she ran out of fuel.. there is good pressure at the little valve on top of the motor, gas spurts out of it. If there is fuel there, could it be any of the other fuel related possibilities?

Checked for spark at the spark plug wires, there is spark there.

Not sure what to do now, I checked the relays, fuses, but fuel is getting to the motor, or at least to that little bleeder thingie.

Any suggestions on anything I can check myself with a little common sense, would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

If you apply a very slight pressure to the accelerator does it stall or continue to run? If it keeps running and dies when you take your foot off the accelerator then I'd say the IAC... Idle Air Control solenoid is bad.

Any check engine light?

What engine is in the Ranger?

The peddle does not seem to make a difference, it will start pushing the peddle or not, but it does not stay running at all. It does not idle. It turns over and then dies, I really thought it was a fuel problem, that is how it acts/sounds. You know, when you keep trying to start a car with no fuel, the starter turns the motor over, then nothing.

The motor is a small one, 4 cyl.

Yes, the check engine lite came on a few days ago, I thought it was because of an incorrect pressure thingie back at the gas cap. We had to "fix" it with pvc but I smell fuel sometimes so I figured it came loose again.

Trying to get a smog friend of mine to come and pull the code for me.

So broke right now. Urgg.

It's been a long time since I worked on a 95 4-cyl Ranger. You have pressure on the fuel rail, spark at the plugs, it starts but immediately dies, IDK. Maybe fuel pressure regulator, big vacuum leak, ....... Changed the fuel filter lately? Remove the gas cap and see if it makes any difference .... since you fixed it.

if you get the code read post it here.

Let's see if the Ranger folks can help you.

..Where in Cali are you as members in your area may be able to help you out?

...The 2.3L is a good motor and your codes will definitely help as it may just be a coil pack problem or fuel pump...Do you hear the fuel pump prime each time you turn the key to the on position?

..I didn't see your answer to what is the fluid that is all over the relay box..Power steering fluid?
