Maybe this is a dumb question...

Can you start a vehicle (run the motor) without the transmission in it?

I have a vehicle sitting until I get $ to rebuild the tranny; the motor is new and I'd like to start her up to get some oil flowin'. It's a manual tranny.

Actually, the vehicle is my Wrangler I'm fixing, and the tranny came out w/o unbolting the starter.

I don't see why not, if the starter's there.... All you need to do is switch on the ignition, then, since the starter' park/neutral interlock likely goes through the trans, just jumper the starter solenoid with a screwdriver and it should crank and fire.

I really wouldn't worry about it though... there's no reason to.

I would worry about that sucker moving around inside it's mounts and shaking the exahust all over the place. Best just to wait until the trans is in IMO
That rotating flywheel scares me a bit too......snag something and BLAMO huge mess

Not too familiar with the H**p engines, but if there is a distributer hole (whether is has a cover plate like the 4.0L Fords) you could make a oil pump prime tool to spin the oil pump. The just rotate the crank 90° at a time through 360° while spinning the pump.

Ahh...good idea about the oil pump. I didn't think about that, and yes, that will definitely work. Yeah, I didn't think about my loose exhaust, either!!!

That Jeep is ABSOLUTELY a H**P. They're all...just....garbage. Fun, though.

They make oil pump prime tools for Chevy's. You can make something similar from an old distributor for cheap. Just spin it with a drill until you get oil pressure, rotate crank 90° and repeat.

Best advice given. This reminds me of a buddy who started his boat motor on an engine stand. Worked great...right up to the point where he goosed the throttle. Flipped the entire mess upside down on it's top. Funniest thing you ever saw.
