I am about to hit the magic 100k mark on my 98 ( 160000kms here in Canada). Should I consider moving to 10w vs 5w due to the higher mileage?

I would'nt. If your not useing oil I would'nt change. Especially this time of year the 5W30 is good.

I have 223000km on my f150 and still use 5w30 no problems yet.
and 211387km on my explorer and have always used 5w30

I switched from 5w to 10w (mobile 1) and now I use 1 quart every 5k miles instead of every 3k (I change my oil every 8k)...

most of my lost oil is from the pan.. (thats where it looks like it coming from)..

I have 310k miles on our '92 0hv.. I've used synthetic since somewhere around the low 100k mark (somewhere under 150k)..

Don't use 10w if you're in Canada. I tried it in NH on my escort and once winter set in, it would barely crank. my mechanic and several friends told me at temps below 25F using 10w is like using molasses until the engine warms up. Both mechanics I talked to said it is very bad for engines to do so because the engine doesn't get good lubrication until engine warms up and oil thins. I put about 1500 miles on it with the 10w oil in it, then switched back to 5w because of hard starts on cold mornings. The escort died soon after.

I have used 10W on my truck for years, but if I lived up north I would probably run 5W or even 0W-30. AMSOIL has a 0W-30 out now. The 10W-30 I use flows to -65 degF so I'm not too worried.

There is no need to go to 10 w 30 oil.

I have over 100k on my '99 and use 0 w 30 ( Amsoil ) and have never had to add any oil.

Good luck ....

Personally I use synthetic 5w30 year round and lose no oil. Considering where you live, I would do 5w30 or 0w30. Synthetic would be a good idea as well.
