starter spins, no engage

new starter solenoid

since starter didn't work, replaced solenoid. starter now spins on ignition, but only engages the flywheel after many starts. my question is, will installing new brushes cause the starter to engage completely? thank you, cogs

I have always just bought new starters, and never took any apart, but i would say that putting brushes into it will not help it engage. They mearly are the electrical connection that allows the motor to turn when voltage is put to the motor. You most likely have a problem in the mechanicals that plunge the gears to where they need to be. Also look at the ring gear. If teeth are damaged or missing then it will not engage everytime, or at all.
