hi i have a 1998 explorer that has spells when you try and start it it will crank for a very long time and try not to start.this is a random problem with no rhyme
are reason for it not starting any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
Welcome to the site--

Sounds like a fuel pump issue to me--

Try these things
Check the fuel pump relay--maybe swap it with another just like it (there are 4 of the same type I believe)
Listen real closely in the fuel fill area for the fule pump--switch key to on (not start) and listen for the electric motor sound
Notice when you first switch on key--check engine light should come right on--if not- check the PCM relay--( it will also kick fuel pump on and off if it is intermittent)

lastly-How long has it been since you had an oil change--I had an issue a while back where my truck wouldn't start due to thinned oil-- brought on by another problem--
This link will show where the relays are located--

moved to stock 95-01 forum--

Welcome! I agree, try listening for the pump, and check your fuel filter.
