Hey guys, like the title says i am starting the tubo build on the 2002 explorer v8. Before i start building a turbo kit myself anyone know of a single turbo system i can buy? Also i has no idea of how much power this truck can take with out braking. Anyone know? Does the fuel system need upgrading? The 4x4? The axles? The tranny? Just throw everything you guys know. Please all help would be very helpfull. Thank you.

I recommend contacting our forum vendor-
www.hensonperformance.com

The critical step will be the tuning, after all the hardware is in place. I would have him involved from the beginning. I bet he can work great deals on the turbo stuff

I agree.
The key is that you end up with components that work together so they can be tuned. Anything mismatched, and you are in trouble.

James is a great guy, and his prices will surprise you (In a good way).

That's it? Thanks for the info?
When does the build start?

The build will start in two weeks when the twin turbo cobra build is done. I already have the plans how im going to do everything. Hope it all comes together its going to take a lot of time.

The turbo build does seem more technical to me.
Routing oil, where to make the turbo fit, and routing/welding of exhaust all don't seem very easy to me.

On the up side, there is more room on top of the motor for an intercooler. What about an air to air intercooler mounted in front of your rad?

On the rear mount turbo, there seems to be the difficulty of where to mount the air filter, and also routing the compressed intake air back up to the MAF.

I'm interested, as I have a very basic understanding of Turbo, but don't quite get the details of the right way. I'd love to attempt one one day.

Well the first thing im going to do is take the front of the truck apart. Look and see where i car put things. My plan is to run the intercooler in the front, on the lower part of the bumper where the second air opening is. I dont want the turbo in the engine bay, to much heat for a dd. So im putting the turbo in the front bumper on the passanger side, where the dock for the fog light is. The fog lights im removing so i get more air in the front of the truck. And thats the plan, pretty simple just going to take a while.

Are you going to Y the exhaust pipes together before the the turbo?

I've been reading about the STS, and it looks pretty good. Im wondering what the negatives are of this.

Yep headers into a y to the turbo. If done right without putting to much boost itll be fine.

And while were at it, Update?

IT may be worth your while to just throw one of the "less potent" kenne bell superchargers on your rig. The 6-psi kit w/o the intercooler would cost you about 4 grand + shipping. And would be a plug and play 330ish rwhp no problem. And it would come with all the nessasay misc upgrades like injectors and such. Then all you need to do is get it tuned for the FI.
