I would like to know if there is a way to adjust the steering box in my 92 Explorer. I find there is too much play in the wheel. I saw it here once, but I cannot find it on how to do this. Thanx. :D

that sounds odd..... i have never heard of adjusting the steering box to get rid of play.... play in a steering system is normally associated with balljoints and tierods.....

I was on this site awhile back and there was a post up on how to adjust this, if memory is correct when doing this it was reported better steering feed back.

It is possible to adjust the steering box, but I don't recomend dooing it. There are several downfalls to adjusting the box and one of them is saftey. By tightning the box you will reduce its ability to return to center and this will have a dramatic affect on handeling. If you feel your steering box has to much play in it, your best bet is to replace it.

While I agree with mrboyle, you can adjust your box. That's why they put an adjustment screw in it, over time the worm gear can develop some play. To do this simply raise the front to take the wieght off the steering and back off nut to loosen, use a screw driver to tighten up play, when satisfied with adjustment, tighten nut back down. This adjustment screw is located on top of box, you can see it by radiator. Do not over tighten, it can damage the worm gear inside. I would have someone rock steering wheel back and forth while adjusting till play is gone.
