Steering Shaft binding up?

Has anyone had their steering shaft bind up? I have a 2003 and the steering has gottern real tight, don't know if it is a big deal and will break, or if it will free itself? I have 4 cars so it sits a lot and of course my mechanic wants to replace it...$$$

I did one on a 02 a few months ago. it would bind at one point every rotation.
