I know this has been beaten to death but, I've done several searches and still have questions. Am I understanding this right? I only have to do one of these 2 things to bypass the factory amp--either run speaker wires from the 4 door speakers to the back of my aftermarket HU, or plug an amp bypass harness up to the input and output on the bottom of the factory amp. What I need to know specifically is, depending on which route I go with, is there anything additional that needs to be done? I have to take off the door panels to install new speakers and take off the rear passenger side panel to run wire to my Thunderform sub anyway, so I can do either of the 2 applications. Please...Please...Please, walk me through this and assume that I don't know anything cuz that would be mostly true. Thanks a lot.

Amp By pass = Piece of Cake

You have a Gen I X, so your amp by pass couldn't be easier. Just pull back the passenger side cargo bay window/fender/etc trim so you can see the amp. The by pass plug will just be 6" long, and all you do is unplug the input and out puts from the factory amp and connect the 2 with the bypass plug. Much easier than the Gen II X's which require the bypass wires being run up from the amp to the HU...

Nope, nothing additional other than what you've mentioned needs to be done. And, since you'll already have that panel off to fiddle with your sub then that would be a good time to do the bypass if you wanted to. Another option would be to simply cut the connectors off either side of the amp and solder / crimp the wires together. I used the bypass wiring on mine but any of those options should work.

quick response

You guys told me exactly what I needed and hoped to hear. If it ever gets above zero here, or my husband finishes the transmission job that's all over the garage, I'll get this done. Everyone on this forum is so helpful-thanks a lot.

Oh, and speaking of below freezing temperatures - I have a nasty habit of doing this kind of stuff in cold weather. Be careful of those plastic push pin things that hold on the panels - they're very non-flexible when they are very cold. I broke two even though I didn't even stress them much

Yeah, I just moved to International Falls, MN, and I bought a new explorer so I had to transfer all of my stereo stuff to the new one. I just finished running the wiring for my 4ch amp from my HU, which sounds WAY BETTER than the clarion deck that I have b/c I have it running through an EQ now. It's amazing the difference an $80 EQ can make in a stereo system, I bought the EQ so I could have better control over my sub volume, but it made the 4 speakers sound 10x better than before.

But anyway, it's actually above zero here right now but it's still way too cold to install stuff, good thing I have ambition when it comes to stuff I like to do! I didn't get to do the amp bypass thing b/c the amp was built into the head unit, so I ran speaker wire straight from the factory harness to the amp, which I figured would be easier than tearing the door panels off again. Anyway, good luck!

I guess it's been awhile since I've posted on this site, as you can see from my profile. That old config is ancient, although I just picked up the 2000 a month ago. Just thought I'd let ya know!

oops, I guess it updates all of your profiles. I'll stop talking now...
