So I just got the X back from the shop. They replaced the rear axle seals, rotors, pads, e-brake shoes. They said the axle fluid was causing my pads to stick and that was what it was clunking from. So then they tell me that I have to pay for labor, I got a little upset. So I pulled out my quote that they gave 2 weeks ago, and no where it said that there was suppose to be any labor. After he looked at it for a few minutes. He took it off and I got all the brake labor taken off. So back to my original issues I was having. When I would be slowing down. There would be a clunk, not all the time though. When I dropped it off this morning I told them to grease the slip yoke from hearing that can be cause of this sound. Well they didn't, cause I think they didn't think that I meant dropping the drive shaft. Well Is this job something I can do I a hour of time, I have the tools just don't want to start a project that I could mess up. I don't really want to pay for anything else right now cause I am hella broke. I really don't have any other idea of what this could be making that clunk.

Now I did read over that other post. I just had one question. When installing the slip yoke after its been greased. Does it have to be put back in exactly in the same splines or is there a way you can tell when you get it off, or does it not really matter.

I think the important thing would be to make sure that when you take the driveshaft off the rear differential, mark it so that you bolt it back into the same position. As long as you don't move the truck, then the splines will also be in the same position.

Good thread!!
I retitled it, do you think I should move it to the driveline forum and sticky it???

it seems closed--couldn't bump

Its in the old General Explorations forum. They closed it when they split the forum into 1st Gen, 2nd Gen, etc.

I had a 99 mazda pickup that drove me crazy for the bang noise when i came to a stop or when i took off. I eventually sold the truck to a friend and told him i cant figure out what the bang is but it has been like that for about two years with no issues. About three months later after i sold the truck he told me that he changed the driveshaft and the noise went away. DAM i wish i found this thread back then. It would have saved me all the grief and time troubleshooting the issue. My 2000 x sport does it very little but now i know what it is and how to fix it.

thanks great post must have this sticky somewhere.
