stock exhaust manifold removal question

ill see if i can get a pic up tomorrow, but im afraid if they do have something that will grab the rounded bolts and get them out so they wont have to cut them, that one bolt i cut will be too weak and the head will twist off

Well if just one is left, then thats no biggie - if all else fails, just cut the head off of the bolt (if it hasnt already twisted off), pull the manifold off, and weld to the rest of the bolt.

yeah thats something i wont be able to do, i really need to invest in a welder and a plasma cutter

Sorry I meant the shop you bring it to should be able to do the welding.

i hope their smart enough, most people would rush through it and make it even harder

i got them put on today, and it sounds really good. i felt a big power gain as well. did you know ford didnt use gaskets on the manifolds? when they pulled them off there were no gaskets there. so i ended up not putting on gaskets so they are leaking now, so i guess ill buy some felpro gaskets and put them on, other than that im pretty happy

are you sure the factory gaskets werent just burned through? im pretty sure they used gaskets from the factory.

anyways.. howd you get the bolts out? i just read 2 pages of this and the end of the story wasnt there!

im sure, there were no gaskets at all, they were not stuck on the head or manifolds, i thought it was pretty weird.

anyways, for all but one bolt, the guy hit a smaller socket on the rounded bolts and got them out, on the last one he had to cut off the head and he welded a nut on and backed it out.

and a FYI for anyone who buys from pacesetter, the y pipe that came with the headers did not bolt up to the cats, i had to take it down the highway to a exhaust place so they could weld on a pipe to connect it. it might not be this way with all applications, but for the 4.0 they did not line up

it was insanely LOUD driving with open headers and sounded awesome!

Part number for studs

I know this is an old thread but I wanted to pass on some info. I had to replace the heads on my girlfriend's 99 Explorer 4.0 OHV. Most of the studs on the exhaust manifold were toast. Searches on the internet and parts stores mostly turned up the flange bolts where the exhaust bolts to the manifold. I went to the local Ford dealership and they wanted $11 per stud. If you want all new ones that would be 11x12 and a ridiculous cost for studs. Sorry, I don't have the Ford part number. BTW, as someone mentioned previously some 4.0 engines had bolts and not studs. Anyway...after a lot of searching I did find a package at NAPA that worked. Part number 600-2604 "Exhaust Manifold Hardware Kit" that came with 10 studs and 10 nuts. I reused 2 old studs. These were slightly longer than the originals but worked fine. Size was M8-1.25 x 62mm. I think the cost for the NAPA bubble pack was $12.
