it's a 1994 Explorer (V6 4.0L).
not off-roading just lifting and putting tires on for the looks.

i'm not going to drive like an ####### or anything so, should i be fine with the stock gears?

also any driving tips that would help prolong the life of my tranny would be great.

The big deal with stock 3.73s and 33s is the engine RPM at cruse.

You will basically loose your overdrive for anything less than 70 MPH or so.

Here is a chart to help you figure out your gearing. Check the RPM range for the tire size and gearing you want to run. The closer you keep it to stock, the more you will like it unless you are looking for a performance advantage, then go one step up in the RPM band. For instance, 4.10s with 33s is close to stock, 4.56s will give a performance boost and still work great. I recommend the 4.56 for 33s, but I'm running the 4.10s myself and it is OK.

As for cost, figure $750 an axle if you have to take it somewhere. For that kind of money, I'd learn how to do my own. It isn't rocket science and mainly takes time (which is why it costs so much). You would need a couple of specialty tools like a dial indicator and stand, a torque wrench, and a couple of sockets, but otherwise it is just nuts, bolts, and MUCHO patience. Tools from Harbor Freight would run you around $50. Parts are $150 an axle. Looking to save close to $1000 for your efforts...

thanks for the help. i was thinking about running 4.10s also but i'm not sure. I'm gonna worry about getting the lift and the tires/wheels first. then just drive it till i got the money and time to get the new gears. I work at a repair shop so I got all the tools and only have to pay for parts.
