hey guys.... i was just wonderin a couple things about exhaust... i was tryin some things with my exhaust to see what sound i liked... and well...a glass pack makes it sound alright at idle, but makes it sound like a friggen honda when rappin it up... and well...when i hooked up a piece of exhaust pipe and ran it to the back, with no muffler of ne kind...from the cats back... it was just a little too louder than i liked it for idle.. but it sounded alright rapped up... but i heard that the 4.0 needs the backpressure... so would straight pipes give it enough back pressure ? and if ne one already has em.. how do u like the sound...?? thanx...

Stright pipes would be extreemly loud. Cops would love you!

actually, it wasn't too loud... my dad has a 72 bronco with a 351 windsor... headers...dual exhaust...glasspacks...and it is a heck of a lot louder than my explorer was...
but thanx for the reply....
the cops already love me... (they don't like lights...and their sole purpose here is to bust kids..) lol

In my opinion, with no muffler the sound isn't too great. It's loud, but sounds like crap. Get a Flowmaster and run a straight pipe. It's still very loud but also has the Flowmaster sound we all love. I would like a straight pipe from my muffler, but I think it would be too much work unless I got it done.

the bronco is a v8 its gonna be louder.

well, how much is the flowmaster?? oh.,...and well, i guess after actually thinkin 'bout what i wrote... they aren't exactly "straight" pipes.... it had a few pretty good bends in it... but would the exhaust, without a muffle produce enough backpressure? cuz i wouldn't even power break on gravel!! (directly after unbolting the exhaust from the back of the cats... i put it in gear and tried to power break on the gravel...didn't work..:()

I have duals on my 94 ex looks and sounds good and its loud

I'm not sure about the backpressure. If it changes how your X drives, then obviously there's some problem without the muffler. I assume a muffler will create a lot more backpressure than not having one. I got mine from Summitracing.com for $60, which is a pretty good price. A straight pipe is a pipe that runs out, or very near, the rear bumper. The OEM style has lots of curves, and that takes away a lot of sound.

i have a stright pipe on my 91 X and i think it sounds great and every one tells me that it sounds really good to i think it sounds a lot better then flowmasters

Unless I'm wrong here, but "straight" pipes doesn't mean if the pipe is bend free at all, it only means, no muffler or sound suppressor in-line.

as in strickly pipes... nothing else. so you can have bends in the pipe and it still called Straight Pipe Exhaust. But the fewer bends the better flow you'll get.

...or I can be totaly wrong... I'm just going off what I've been told years ago.:)
