Strange Problem, could not find the answer

My wife has a 2004 Ford Explorer 4.6 4x4 with the towing package. As of late, we have been experiencing a hard shutter at the front axle when the auto awd engages or disengages. (Feels like the front diff is locking up). HOWEVER, if the vehicle is placed in 4x4 High, there is no problem. Also, there is no problem on dry roads when the AWD is not engaged.

It seems like it is a problem with a controller, but I am unsure where to start (no codes). We also had the transmission re-programmed about a 18 months ago.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know what you are experiencing but the auto 4X4 is very annoying to me. I can't stand the banging in and out so the first time it happens I switch to 4X4 high untill, I no longer need 4X4. What you are feeling maybe normal, don't know.

You are describing normal 4x4 auto operation. Put it in 4x4 high in bad weather conditions.

Normal? In the previous 93,000 miles it never did this, so I have a problem accepting that it is normal. Quite frankly, it is so severe it feels like the front wheels could lock up.

Sorry but if you had made your last statement part of your first post, I don't think anyone including me would have said it was normal. Unless someone has had the same problem you might not find the answer. It's hard to even guess what might be wrong with out sitting in the driver seat and feeling what is happening.
Here is a guess you may very well be on the right track about a controler the Auto position uses the ABS sensors to determine if a wheel is slipping, there could be a short or modual or PCM problem that is causing the ABS to apply one of the front brakes or both at the same time that it applies voltage to the TC magnetic clutch. Which would explain why it feels like the wheels are locking up.
Did the problem happen after the reprograming?

Remove the main ABS fuse under the hood, the ABS light will probably come. Test drive in snow and see if the problem goes away. Don't pull any ABS fuses in the passenger compartment some are dual purpose and also effect the air bags, check you manual for fuse locations.
