The flashing light means the GEM (computer) thinks theres a problem with the transfer case.
I would shut off the engine, wait a few seconds then start and try again. Remember that you need to have the trans in N and your foot on the brake to shift into or out of 4WD low.
The GEM (generic Electronic Module) can be reset by disconnecting the battery. However, if the actuation function itself is stuck, banging on it will sometimes net you one last change

Recommend not to hit the electric shift motor as you will possibly fracture the permenant magnets inside. Best to remove shift motor and check it's function.
Its more likely that its a problem with one of the shift motor sensors than it is with the GEM. If it happens again, you can have the code(s) read from the GEM with a Ford Enhanced scan tool. This will give you an idea of which component is causing the problem.
