Stuck in park

We have a 2007 Eddie Bauer 4.0. It's stuck in park, the brake lights work and I changed the shift interlock module with no luck. When I try to shift out of park it feels like the old stick shift cars when the rods were out of adjustment and binding. Any thoughts? I thought it might be the shifter or cable, but I would like so advice before I throw any more parts at it.

Shoot man I would’ve said the interlock. Maybe the cable is bound up? Perhaps visually inspect it.

I think there is a manual override for the release under the rubber mat in the cupholders. I think that is usually only needed if the battery is dead (brake interlock won't release). But it's worth a try.
