Last night I entered the world of aftermarket upgrades with the addition of the DynoSources Superchip and the KKM Induction Kit to my 2000 XLT. I installed the chip first. I decided on the DynoSource after reading a few good reviews on this page and after speaking with Jim and DynoSources. He was extremely helpful in answering non-chip related questions.

The installation took about 25 minutes. It would have gone quicker, but I had to clean the plastic coating off the the computer terminals. Once that was done, it was just a matter of putting the computer back in its slot and re-connecting the battery terminals. I was very pleased when the engine turned right over.

NOTE: The 2000 Explorers do not require a jumper for chip installations. I would not have been happy if I had to send the computer to Washington State for a jumper.

I immediately hit the road and was very pleased with the engine response and the new shift points. I could definitely feel a "seat of the pants" increase and the shifting was much smoother. I won't even try to guess how much HP I gained, but I am happy with the increase.

I let my wife test drive it (she had no idea what type of upgrade I made) and her immediate comments were "It doesn't seem to be struggling to go up our hill" and "it seems to be shifting much smoother". For me, that sealed it. I had made the right choice.

NOTE: The size of the chip creates a gap between the edge of the computer mount and the firewall. This creates a rush of wind up through the defrosting vents inside the vehicle. This is easily fixed with some adhesive weather stripping. Cut the stripping to create a nice seal. The sound was totally eliminated.

After I successfully installed the chip I figured I would go for another modification and I installed the KKM Air Induction Kit. This installation was as easy as the chip and produced similar results. It takes about 3 minutes to remove the stock set-up and the KKM attaches in about 2 minutes. I thought that it would sound so loud that I would not like it, but I haven't noticed any significant increase in noise from the engine.

I did feel an greater response off the line with the addition of the KKM.

The chip is a bit pricey, but I feel it is worth the cost. I have read on this page that the JET chips and SuperChips offer little benefit. I am not sure if that is true and I am not bashing either chip, but I do know that the DynoSources came through for me.

Next on my list is a catback setup and new plugs/wires.

I want to thank the people who maintain this page. It is a great source of information. Thanks!

I just purchased a SuperChip and was wondering what is the difference between the DynoSources Superchip and my SuperChip.
My chip is for a stock 91 4.0l EFI.

I am very pleased with the engine response however, I lost the kick and the sound the trottlebody makes (woo) when I put the Pedal to the metal.

Here's what I know. After searching just about every post on this web page, I learned that a few people who used the SuperChip did not notice any difference with the chip. I am not sure if that is true or not, but it was enough for me to question if it was the right chip for me. My search also included information on Hypertech and DynoSources.

I eliminated Hypertech based on some feedback regarding the stock thermostat. It seems that Hypertech users have to change their thermostat (can't recall the reason, but it's on the board somewhere).

When I spoke to the people at DynoSources I was impressed with their friendly attitude and their willingness to help answer non-chip related questions. When I asked what the difference was between SuperChips and DynoSources, Jim at Dyno told me that his program gives a little more fuel and that the shift points are different. Is that true? I don't know. What I do know is that I felt a definite change with the chip. The throttle is definitely more responsive. As for the sound, it definitely has more growl to it (maybe that just in my head, but it works for me!).

I'm sure that the SuperChip provides benefits as well. It is just that my research and the great service and attitude from Dyno pushed me away from Hypertech and SuperChip. I think that SuperChip offers a 30 day money back guarantee. If you are still in the 30 day window you might want to try the Dyno chip and do a comparison. That is the only real way to tell the difference.

I love what the chip has done for me.

With the Dyno chip do you have to use 92+ octane or can you use 87? I think with the Superchip you might have to use 92+. Just wondering.

for my '99 sport,I put the kkm and the superchip and noticed an improvemnt right away, the shift points are higher, thus more torque, and I have not had any problems with my kkm as some people had posted little to no gains, with my kit i did not have to plug any vacuum lines like some some of the earlier explorers had to do,not sure if that would have something to do with the poor response. I did have to ship my computer to superchip for jumpers to be installed,it only took 2 days, but I was not happy about it. but I am happy with the final gains. Dead Link Removed

I'm considering purchasing a chip, but a have a few questions about it. Does installing a chip void the factory warranty. And...if it does, do you take the chip out everytime before going to Ford for 'routine' maintenance? Will the chip do any longterm damage?

Thanks

I read many posts on warrantees with the chip and the general consensus is that it will not void the warantee. I believe there was actually a law that prohibits the car companies from voiding a warantee because of the use of an aftermarket chip. As for damage, the chip is meant to help the performance, not hurt it. I don't believe there are any negative repercussions to using the chip.

Good luck

all the superchips was designed to do is screw with the fuel and ignition curves, and change the shift point parameters.

as far as the KKM causing summer problems, common sense as i see it would imply that it reduces problems. Given, it is sucking in underhood air, but the decreased parasitic losses of the engine from breathing through a hole the size of a quarter should more than make up for it. Just an observation, slam it if it suits ya.

With the hypertech, you do have to change the thermostat to either a 180 degree or 160 degree. I just purchased a 160 degree today and at O'Reilly's they only cost like 7 bucks which is half the price of AutoZone. I realized that I needed to purchase one when my truck started to overheat out of nowhere and I have been running the hypertech computer for about 6 months. I need all of the cooling I can get here in Louisiana especially with the summer coming up. The part number for the 4.0L OHV is 1000 for the 160 degree and 1018 for the 180 degree. I love my hypertech.

Holy digging up old threads Batman..!!!
