My explore seems to have suffered a random drop in mpg. would a dirty fuel filter cause this?

It's possible. There are many factors to MPG.

How many miles are on the truck? What is your average?

Check your tire pressures! That's the absolute first and easiest thing that comes to mind.

I monitor my mileage as well in my vehicles and just about every time I've seen a drop in the mileage, it's been because of low tire pressures somewhere. You'd be surprised just how much gas mileage you can lose just by being a few pounds low in each tire.

i check my tires regularly, and i carry the same stuff all the time, the weight only changes when i add gas to the tank haha it has 106k miles i believe. my average was roughly 15 now im lucky to see like 9

since you have 106k, new plugs, new cops, new fuel and air filter helps (a tuneup)
also clean the maf and throttle body.

cold weather also affects MPG very much since air/tire pressure will decrease and some gas station has that winter blend gasoline.

no changes in driving habits? same gas station?

no change in habits and same gas. what are cops?

If the plugs are still original, change those. Whatever you do, do only one thing at a time. So you'll know what fixed it.

Fuel filter can definitely be the problem, but likely would be over time rather than sudden.

When I got my X it was using about 18L/100km, I changed plugs, cleaned everything, etc. Ended up at about 17.6.

Changed my fuel filter and went to about 14L/100km.

That is a gain of over 2MPG!
