I have a 1999 Sport 4.0L SOHC with the 5R55E, and 4.10 gears if that matters. The transfer case in it right now is 4405. It is starting to not engage properly and having troubles with it. I do a fair bit of offroading.

I have searched and found that some people have put in T-cases from rangers or F150s? Not sure I want to go manual. Would it be better to put in a T-case from a sport trac cause they are not auto? I have just gotten confused with the different speed sensors, wiring harnesses. I would like to keep the dash lights and all but I am open to ideas at this point.

So I guess basically what I am trying to ask is what T-case do I need, out of what model, out of what year... Or are the 4405 a decent T-case and should I just rebuild it?

The 4405 case is a good t-case, if you are looking for an auto4wd case. And as bolt in options go your only options are either another 4405, or a 1354 manual. Although the 1354 manual(from a 99-04 Ranger) is a direct bolt in, you would need to fit the linkage to your truck. The F150 cases you've read about are for the V8 and won't fit your V6. A 1354 electric will bolt in but the electronics modifications are not for the faint of heart. Take a look at the "My 4405 to 1354 swap thread" link in my signature. It lays out the swap if the 1354 electric is where you're looking to go. If you have any questions, ask away.
