I will be changing the ATF this w/e and would like some recommendations on which synthetic ATF to use. The tranny i will be using it in is not 4WD (Ranger) and is not subjected to heavy loads and pulling, but it is a A4LD (I'm pretty sure).
Whoever the mental giant was that had this truck previously put about 1.5 pints too much in and it is looking slightly tan, not red, although doesn't smell burnt. I don't like the 'sloppy' shifting, so it's time for a change....
Which syn ATF ?

Don't know if this is much help but I have been running Red Line syn ATF in my 5 speed auto for the last 10K miles. No problems and it shifts fine. I wasn't experiencing any problems with shifting to start with so I can't say if it will help your situtation out or not. It seems the tranny's are a weak point on these trucks so I figure it could not hurt, might help.

Take a look at AMSOIL's ATF. Lasts 3 times longer than conventional ATF, lowers operating temps 20 to 50 degrees and your tranny will shift a lot better.

Thanx, those were the 2 I had in mind. For only a matter of conveinence(sp) I am going with Redline. The AMSoil dealer here is way outta the way, but he was very helpful and knowledgeable. A friend of mine passes by the Redline dist. (BSR Products in the Heart of NASCAR land) every day to and from work. They are the same price and he is going to pick up 5 quarts today. The AMSoil guy said that is what my tranny would take (almost) with a full pan-drop/filter replace. I will let you know Sat nite if there is an immediate difference. I want to get another 50K out of this tranny! I just hope I caught it in time, I think so.
Thanx again, film at 11..

I changed again. The AMSoil guy here in Charlotte called me and is going to DELIVER to me tommorrow. No muss, no fuss. So, even though I got Castol Syntec 5-30 w/Mobil-1 filters in all 4 household vehicles, I still need 2 Filters (for the Volvo and the Chevy POS-10). The dist. here said AMSoil doesn't make a cone-type filter (for the 95 Ranger and 95 Exp). Is that right? I said I already got K&Ns in the Fords but don't care, the Volvo and the S-10 take flats anyhow. AgExp, you guys run a customer-oriented business with top line products and knowledgeable reps.
Good job. If the ATF does what I think it will do, you have converted me, next will be the diffs in the Exp and the pumpkins in all ! (especially the A4LDs, and I got 2 of 'em)
Yeah charger, the Ford A4LD autos are weak (LD stands for Light Duty..on a 4x4 truck??, go figure) just do a search on transmissions here..you will be up all nite. But you are doing the right thing by going syn w/ either AMSoil or Redline, the stats on both are close. Just check often and change the fluid at the FIRST sign (color, smell) of danger.
In fact, I may pop a drain plug in the tranny pan when I drop it to make it easier and less messy to do in the future.

Great! You will not be disappointed. When you get ready to do the diffs, try the Series 2000 75W-90 Gear Lube. You will not have to change it out unless it becomes contaminated.

AMSOIL does not make the conical style filter for the '95. I had a KN until I found out what they don't do and that's stop dirt from entering the engine. Went back to the Motorcraft air filter and did not notice any loss in performance.
