I just bought a '97 sohc with 52,000mi it's in great shape except for just a few things which are now fixed.
My question : It's time for new oil and filter, do I go synthetic or not. Can I just add syn. to the crankcase after draining or do I have to prep it? Are the molecular properties going to adversly affect my 6 or will I get more horsepower and better mileage? What about syn. trans. oil? Gearbox?
Thanks in advance,
Phaulty

you can just add it after you drain the old oil - you dont need any prep.

you may get some better mileage, but you probably wont notice it much, and, as far as power goes, i dont think youll gain anything.

a lot of people do trans fluid and gearbox too, but i havent yet.

also, i recommend mobil 1.

I highly recommend synthetic oil; I personally use Mobil 1 10 w 30 in my truck,

I also highly recomment the use of Mobil 1 ( or other brand ) synthetic in the rear end and tranny.

Good luck.........

i use synthetic mainly because of convenience.
i change my oil every 10,000 to 15,000 miles (which is fine for synthetic, but i dont think it's a good idea with regular).

another thing to keep in mind, which leenjen reminded me of; how often do you change synthetic oil? personally, i still change mine every 3000; some people say 6000; others go longer. youre probably better off using your own judgement, otherwise youre gonna get a million different answers.

I use Amsoil 0/30 synthetic 2000.

this oil can last a very long time without breaking down,

However : if you leave your oil in for extended drain intervals.....that does not mean that you will not be changing the filters .the regular Amsoil filter gets changed every 5000 miles, the bypass filter gets changed every 10'000

my setup consists of a dual remote bypass system from Amsoil.

and my oil has been in there almost 20'000 miles.
I am of course using oil analysis, and they will let me know when to change the oil. I take a sample at every 10'000 .it's very easy to take samples with the petcock valve installed near the 2 filters mounted in behind my grill.

I'm told that a big rig went over 400,000 miles without an oil change using analysis and topping off oil after
changing filters. !

Do you have a pic of your filter set up? Also do you have a link to where it was purchased?

Thanks....

I just did a search for the pics ,and found my post
in " modified explorations"

"some pics of a few mods" from jan 10 th

the thread is still there, but the pics are empty ,
photopoint says they are no longer available ?

I run Royal Purple simply because we use it in heavy machinery at work and it is excellent. I have used Mobil 1 in my Mustang and it seems good also. Any good synthetic will be an excellent choice. I'm changing the filter at 3,000 miles and the oil at 6,000 miles and the oil still looks new and purple.

Al,

I think I still have a pic of Bill's Dual Remote set up. I'll check when I get home this evening. I'll e-mail you the pic and how you can get a dual remote.

thanks Gary

I have Amsoil synthetic in everything (engine, tranny, transfercase, and front/rear diff) it is excellent oil. The person who installed the tranny fluid said he had personally experianced the difference with a F150 a client had. he said it used to always boil the tranny fluid and overheat because it was used to push cars at a dirt track. He said after they installed the Amsoil, the truck never overheated and the fluid never boiled again...even on the hottest nights.
I HIGHLY recommend Amsoil in everything. The price is a little higher then normal oil, but it's worht every penny

Al,

My e-mail program bit the dust and the backup "wizard" didn't backup everything. I had the pics saved in a folder that was lost. I'll have to look in my pic files to see if I saved them there. I sure hope so.

Travis, Thank you for the glowing recommedation.

For all who are interested in changing over to AMSOIL, shoot me an e-mail and I'll work out a discount with you.
