Well, I purchased a 92' Explorer 4wd with 98,000miles on it. The previous owner said he always had shops do the oil change with Synthetic fluids through out. I'm assuming by that he ment everywhere. Anyways, I plan on using Mobile 1 in the motor but what about in the Tranny. I've seen synthetic ATF but never owning a auto before I don't know about it and how it works in our trannys. What do you guys think about Sythetic ATF? Do you use it? If so what do you use? If not, What do you use? I will be doing moderate off roading with it once it's built to my likings and I'll be using it to tow 2-3 dirt bikes, people, and gear to the track or riding spot almost every weekend.
Thanks for the info!!

yeah, i wanna switch to synthetic tranny oil too - im gonna do my first tranny oil change at 30,000 miles, right now i only have 27,000 on my truck. a few questions:

1) like sirhk100 im gonna use mobil 1 in the engine, but what should i use in the tranny?

2) how do you get the original tranny fluid out of the torque converter?

3) how many quarts will i need to do the whole change, including changing the oil in the torque converter?

4) what filter should i use?

anything i missed?

thanks in advance.

I run the synthetic blend in my tranny, change it and the filter every year, no matter what the mileage..Right now, 127,000 miles and counting on the tranny without any trips to the shop..Still shifts smooth, never slips, and doesn't leak..Luck or Care..You make the decision

Discount Auto Parts..AMMCO Brand..Cost, don't remember but I have the receipt in the glove box if you would like , seems like $2.50 a quart...Run it in the transfer too.

Like I said Gimp, don't remember the exact price, but do remember it was about half of full syn..

guys, my main concern is how to get the fluid out of the torque converter. i have friends that work for a respectable heavy equipment repair shop (i.e.: dump trucks, excavators, etc.) and they said one option was to drill a hole in the torque converter and then thread it and plug it. i really do not want to do this, there must be another way to flush the fluid out of the torque converter.

Pull the dust cover and take a look, mine has a drain plug from the factory..Other than that, your only option is to take it to the shop and have them do a system flush..

ok, thanks mdrut. i think ill just have the shop do it to be on the safe side. i dont wanna drain all the atf in my garage and find out that i cant drain the torque converter, and then have to take it to the shop - id be screwed.

unless someone knows whether or not 98's have the drain plug?

full synthetic may cause problems

Hi,

I have informed by a Ford mechanic not to use full synthetic in trannys. They are slippery and can cause slipping of the tranny. Just use what the manual recommends. You can try the Mercon V which is a synthetic blend as I think Ford recommends on all of its vehicles.
