I have a grasp on differentials and how they operate and such, but am limited in my T-case knowledge.

Basically I was wondering why we can`t change the gears in our t-case to get a lower ratio. The only alternative seems to be getting that pretty Atlas case. What gives? Just not designed for anything else then what it came with?

I haven`t seen any posts where this was asked yet, which is why I feel a little aprehensive in asking:D

There was a thread a while back about a second t case that was bolt on. It could bw shifted without your other t case so you could have 2wd low. Or real low low rage.
The Explorer t case is chain driven, so I don't think its possible to change the gear ratio without a new t case.
This board is fairly question friendy, Long as its not totally stupid;)

AHA! it is chain driven! I read about different types of t-cases, but never knew what my Ex had. Interesting...

Technically, it's pretty easy and practical to re-gear at the Xfer case, but the problem is no one seems to make a kit for the Explorer case to do it. You would need new gears and a new chain.

There are kits available for other vehicles. I'm gonna be putting one in my Sammy that reduces 2wd/4hi by 12% and 4lo by 83%. It's a lot cheaper and easier than re-gearing the axles.

You can buy a doubler for about $800.00, which is much cheaper than an AtlasII and would give you a lower ratio. I looked into this, but It won't work with my AtlasII.
Here's alink to the thread about it. BW1350 Doubler

That`s cool ray thanks!
A kit for the t-case would be awesome too.

I`ve said it before and I`ll say it again "I love this site!"

Sorry to double post, but have you heard of anyone buying the doubler yet?

I wonder how or if it would work with the shifter knob and my bench type seat, like would there be room for another knob. Seems to me I would need buckets (If I went that route)

Would love to see someone do this and post pics and such!

A note to those interested in Tom's doubler. Tom is a friend of mine and I have seen the product first hand.

It has ONLY been tested in a 2500lb buggy, never in a heavy Explorer.

I have my doubts as to the ability of the second t-case to handle the torque with the added weight of the vehicle. The BW1350/1354 isn't the greatest t-case in the strength department.

Well its really nice of your friend to market something without product testing or a warning. Im sure Tom would let you buy one knowing it was for an Ex and not say anything:rolleyes:

From what I gathered from him was that the main gear is made by them and since there is no more chain to deal with, I don't see why this shouldn't work. It's all gear driven. Whether the chain drive in your original T-case will hold up or not, I wouldn't know. I would not have that problem with my AtlasII, but the case is too wide for the shifters on my AtlasII to get around.

Id50, you shouldn't have a problem with the shifter being in the way of the bench seat. If it is too close, then you could make the linkage longer.

Cory,
You should see if he will let you try one out and do a product review on the board here in exchange.
Hell if it works, it would be a whole lot cheaper than an AtlasII. 800 bucks to have a 6.15:1 ratio would be killer.
Alot more people here can afford $800.00 as opposed to $2200.00
