Tach show 2k high

The tach on my 01 X randomly shows 2k more than actual RPM. When I smack the top of the dash above the Tach it drops back down. Has anyone had this problem?

Seriously, it sounds like a bad connection in the cluster. The solution might be as simple as re seating all the plugs--

Does it stick high after higher revs? Or is it "jumping" there?

It jumps high, when cruising the tach reads 2k then jumps to 4k when no input change to the loud pedal. I thought of the bad connection but everything else works.
