So today I'm driving down the freeway and I get a strong melting wires, fried electrical type smell. Everything seemed to be working fine. The smell subsided after a while and I kept going. I went to a couple of jobs and on my way back to town noticed my tachometer was no longer working. I'm pretty sure the smell I had was from the cluster heating up from a loose solder joint or something at the tach.ill pull it out when I get home and look for anything that may need to be resoldered or looks burnt. Is there anything else I'm missing that I should check. I'm sure the smell and the tach stopping are directly related because of the correlation of the two things. This rig keeps me busy fixing this and that constantly but it's still better than a car payment. The clutch I put in two years and 130,000 miles ago is starting to slip again so I have that to look forward to. Tryin to put it off until the monsoon season ends here in about a month because I don't really like working on a vehicle in the rain. I've considered parting ways with this thing but I actually do like this old thing. I've had it in some pretty bad spots and it gets me out every time. Well except for the mud hole that I badly underestimated. We won't talk about that.

The tachometer head likely worn out and failed! It could also be a larger electrical issue behind the cluster… just have to inspect it

Also check for any blown fuses
The tachometer is a pretty simple system it gets power and ground and a one wire signal from the pcm

Let us know what you find!
