In my never-ending quest for better gas mileage, I decided to install an Airaid ( http://www.goairaid.com/Poweraid.htm ) Poweraid Throttle Body Spacer.

The manufacturer claims, “incorporates a helix bore that spins the incoming air charge. The increased combustion efficiency provides tremendous torque and mileage increases:”

My interest is mainly in improving mileage but the other potential benefits would, if true, be beneficial. I have friends who have gained up to 3 MPG using this device. I shall keep an open mind….

The “kit” ( $109.95 ) includes all you will need to do the install. The TB Spacer, about 1 inch thick, is red anodized aircraft grade aluminum. However, the hanger bolts have the weird Ford thread ( looks like self tapping screw thread ) on one end and ¼” on the other, are a pain in the arse to install. The company should have simply supplied the correct bolts instead of these “hanger” studs. A CARB certified decal comes with the kit.

First step in the install is to disconnect the battery so the computer will reset.

Next comes the removal of the TB and disconnecting the cruise control linkage ( 1 bolt ) as well as the throttle linkage ( 1 bolt ). The plastic intake pipe ( for lack of a better term ) leading from the MAF is removed to gain access to the TB. The TPS is disconnected. I did notice the backside of the throttle valve was rather carboned up and cruddy looking whereas the front side was pristine; this was cleaned with TB cleaner.

The TB Spacer is installed on the hanger studs with a gasket on each side. The throttle body is then installed. The nuts are tightened and the TPS is reconnected.

The cruise control plate is installed, as is the throttle spacer. The throttle is checked for operation; full opening and closing as well as binding.

The complete install took about 40 minutes with no rush; the hanger studs were the most time consuming.

The battery is connected and the truck is started. It fired immediately but did not want to idle for about 1-2 minutes ( had to keep revving the motor to keep it running ), and then it smoothed out and idled perfectly. A leisurely cruise through the neighborhood was done to get the computer back up to snuff. The truck performed in its normally flawless manner.

A 500-mile road trip is set for Friday….

Thanks Al,

I've often thought about this as well, the increased torque, to make up for my cat-back. The gas-mileage is a plus too (but unlike you, I've all but given up on the issue :) ). Do tell your story after your trip, I'd be interested in how she performs. Does she 'feel' any different now?

I value your opinions, so be honest. I don't want to waste another $100 on a useless mod (like the $350 my useless intake / cat-back cost me).

Now, if I can only find one of these for the 2001 5.0... :)

Ry.

I installed mine 2 weeks ago and have since taken it back off. However, at mysporttrac.com, we discovered that the blue concrete anchors 1/4" x 2-1/4" are exactly the correct pitch and length for the spacer to replace the factory hardware. No damaged threads.

Because of an intake squel. It only happened in a couple of rpm ranges. Since it was not constant, I don't feel that there was an air leak.

I don't know. I may end up putting it back on.

Ron, thanks for the idea of the concrete bolts. I just replaced the jury rigged "hanger" studs with the blue bolts; works great.

I have not had an intake squeel as others have reported.

Time will tell.....

Ron, on another issue, how do you like the Granatelli MAF?

Thanks....

Here is a picture of the above described bolts...

There was a little more hp but a little less torque when comparing the intake/exhaust/MAF runs against the intake/exhaust/custom Superchip runs. However, reinstalling the chip provided an increase of 6hp and 2 ft. lbs. of torque.

I don't believe that the increases can be felt. Was it worth the money? Probably not; but a little hp here and a little torque there all adds up.

I am more concerned with gas mileage; what effect did you observe?

Thanks.....

I didn't calculate the milage, but will if I reinstall it. Even with all of my mods, I still get 16-17mpg city, and 20-21mpg highway so I wasn't concerned about increasing milage.

First impressions of the TB Spacer….

I did a 100-mile road test on I75 yesterday. I noticed a feel of better pulling at speeds over 2k RPM. The acceleration from 70 to 80 MPH was much smoother.

There was NO stranges sounds as a result of the TB Spacer.

That alone makes the purchase price worthwhile to me. I can’t wait to see what happened to the gas mileage…..

Is this spacer better than the Helix one? Helix is slightly cheaper I think. I've thought about doing this mod because it's so inexpensive, but everyone states they are a waste of money. If you notice better pulling at highway speeds, I woundn't consider that a waste. My 4.0 OHV could definately use better highway "pulling" speeds...

How'd the 500mi trip go?

Any numbers?

So what's the verdict on this?

Aldive....r u still pleased

Aldive what was the final outcome as far as an increase in gas mileage after you installed the spacer? Are you still using it and has it developed any sounds?

I cannot give a number for the gas mileage due to this one item, however, when comvined with my other mods, I am getting 30 MPG on the highway.

No, it makes no noise and Yes, I am still using it.

i had the helix on my 4.0 and noticed it pulled harder and it sounded like it was pulling harder ... took it off because i supercharged it ... i'll sell for 50.00 ... says it fits all 4.0 ohv engines ... does not fit all 4.0's. my friends 98 has the throttle bracket that bolts to the side of the manifold ... if yours is like this it will not fit .... i bought it from my friend for 70.00 ... only fits the ones that the bracket bolts to the front of the manifold
