temp gauge question

hi gang! when starting cold, temp builds as usual, then gets just before the red zone and then drops back to normal area and stays there. check engine lite comes on and stays on. have replaced thermostat (needed it anyway) and temp sending unit. blows good heat, jug is full as is radiator,no leaks of any kind and no sign of overheating. im thinking faulty gauge? any thoughts? thank you
