somebody knows... okay guess..

should it be maybe like a full 12 volts at full temp... i got a reading of like 6.5 or something when it was warmed up and like 5.5 when cold. the needle did move a little. i guess i will just replace the temp sender its not that expensive anyways and is probably more likely to be the cause

testy temp

Test the sending unit by grounding it and turning the key on dont start engine. The gauge should go all the way to the right. Make sure u put teflon tape on the threads. Then put some dialetic grease on the wire connector. If this dont work drive it into a lake lmao..............

thanks man but do i want to ground the sender itself or the wire that goes to the guage. well i'll try both and whichever works... nevermind.

one more final note. i KNOW this truck is not hitting full temp like it should. i'm thinking prevous owner pulled thermostat as a precaution instead of fixing the temp guage. however on hot days idling it would still reach normal temp wouldn't it? or is the x's cooling just that good?

well anyways doing the temp sender and thermostat at the same time. anybody got any suggestions? i dont want a 180 degree, but should i go with the 192-195 or the 200+ i live in iowa so its not hella hot in the summer but not super freezing in the winter.

thanks again

temp gauge

stock is the 192 or so.... Make sure you get a thermo that has a lifetime waranty. They are better. I not sure on how you ground it my mech was doing it while i was turning on the key. :) think you have to have wire on and have a lead from sender to ground. I have replaced my therm and it still runs on the lower side of the gauge. When it gets up into the 90's it runs in the middle like it should. I dont know if I need to replace the therm again or not but this is a common problem may have to get a aftermarket gauge with a # dial on it to see really what temp is doing.

well grounded the attaching wire that runs to the guage and sure enough it pegged question answered. yea it looks like the thermostat is kinda hard to reach, not like my 76 bronco's 302 so i will definatly be getting a lifetime thermostat and sender. thanks again guys :)

My Temp guage never seemed to work correctly. Always read high.....telling me that my engine was boiling even on a cold day. So I decided to install a manual temp guage. It turned out that my explorer was running perfectly at a cool temp of 190-200 degrees. (I finally installed the manual temp guage after replacing the temp sender unit, hoses, radiator, and flushing the system 3 times!!)
Why not go with a true mechanical temp guage...and get the facts right! (that is your engine temp)

CHEST NUTS ROASTING ON AN OPEN FIRE....

well for about 15 bucks and less than an hour i'm pleased. new thermostat works great, it doesnt take a half an hour to defrost windows, and temp guage is keeping me informed. it hangs around the "n-0"

sweeet!!

anyone have pics or intructions for their mechanical temp gauge? i got one, i was just intersted in some ideas. thanks!

I could use some help on this too. My temp gauge hits the "L" immediately after starting up. Where is the sending unit located? My t-stat is less than a year old, so my guess is the sending unit is shot.

the sending unit is located next to the thermstat housing. it made of brass and a single wire connects to it. hope this helps:eek:

Thanks Iggy,
Couldn't find anything in Haynes - I appreciate the help!
