My Temperature guage flunctuates up and down as the thermostat opens and closes (I presume). I changed the thermostat and it got only slightly better. At hiway speed in cold weather, the heat changes with the guage. Is this an X thing? Has anyone else had this trouble?

I have had the same problem. I replaced my cap but that really didnt do anything, then just recently I replaced my coolant, where there was a mixture with almost the highest amount of coolant in, about 60% coolant and 40% water or so. And after i did that it stayed between the "r" and the "m" on "Normal" on the gauge. That should fix the problem

We had a similar problem on my wife's Merc Villager mini-van. The temp needle jumped around a lot and the temp from the heater greatly fluctuated. After replacing way too many things...a THOROUGH cooling system flush fixed it. We got gobs of thick goo out of the entire system. I guess poor maintenance of the system over the years allowed everything to gell up. It was really gross stuff! Anyway, this flush, along with a new thermostat fixed it up.
Your temp, obviously, should not fluctuate that much, so I'd guess the coolant is not flowing properly.
Just some info from my past that I hope might help.
Good luck,
Ken
BTW...this system flush is not the average driveway hose off......this required power equipment that gets everything.
