Temperature/Compass problems

I have a 2004 Sport Trac and the temperature/compass indicator is on the blink. I used to be able to just tap the display and the display would come on, but now it seems to be out. I think I could repair it if I could get to the circuit board but I'm not sure how to remove the cover. As it is plastic, I don't want to pry at it and break it. Does anyone know how to safely remove the cover to expose the circuitry?
