I am having a lot of clunking, (actually I clunk each time) when putting it in gear and when accelerating from a stop. I tested the front and rear u-joints by grabbing them and trying to move them. They both seemed ok, but the rear seems to have some play in the diff? what could this be?

How exactly should you check the u-joints.
Any Ideas?
Thanks

with vehicle in gear or park, not running of course, crawl under and have a assistant rock the vehicle while you inspect the u-joint's there should be NO PLAY BETWEEN THE 2 YOKES !!! I just installed 2 new rockwell heavy duty u-joints after i noticed i bearing cup was missing a large piece, The new u-joint cured a 2000rpm hum that was driving me nuts and now i dont have that huge BANG CLUNK THUMP when it goes into gear.

I have also heard that the slip yoke in the driveshaft itself will cause a clunk noise when stopping/starting.

The first sign that a U joint is going out is a rust color coming from right around the bearing cap seal.

There should be some slight play in teh rear diff, you should be able to move the driveshaft about 1/4"-1/2" in each direction before it stops.

I believe there is a TSB about the slip yoke noise.

Hope that helps........

Does anyone know where to find out more about TSB's? I remember there was a website that had info on all of them.
Anyone know of a fix for the slip yoke problem, someone said that is what it probably was. (Just replace it?)
Thanks Guys

I believe you just take it apart and put a little bit of grease in there. That quitens it down until it dries out again. I read that on this board somewhere when I was trying to figure out my problem. I ended up just deciding to live with the noise.
