I underestimated how much rtv i was gonna need lol

Especially if it leaks again, only if you had have used the right stuff lol. Get it, get it ha ha.

Here's a link to the stuff. It also acts as as expandable sealant that actually glues itself to the metal, but is easy to remove with a razor knife. Where as RTV just slips right off. What so good about is that it expands due to thermal conditions where RTV does not and it is ATF resistant. Just noticed that they make a different type if it is to be used in a high torque application. There are guys that have cured their doubler leaks with this stuff. But it is expensive.
Hint, leave about a 1/4" tit at the end of the tube. Then next time you need it just pull the hardened plug out. I've even used it to fill around holes in bulkheads where wire or tubing passes through, once cured it makes for a hard rubber plug between bulkhead and wire.

Eric ended up coming over at midnight with some permatex t
Rtv that said it was for transfer cases and differentials. I used permatex ultra grey so almost the "right stuff". Ill eat crow if it leaks though and go buythe Right stuff, i actually followed the instructions this time though so we'll see.

yeah that's my thing is I don't want to run a a4ld, at least not without about 1500 bucks to put in and beef it up haha. Well the above the pivot idea is not going to work, it just to steep of an angle to the shifters, especially to the back case. Kirby you haven't mentioned but have you ever had any trouble with the cases popping out of gear? I'm going to shim the shifters with a few washers to put some pre-load on them, I'm hoping that will be enough.

I didn't get them built, cleaned out the garage and got a few other things done on the bdos, but I didn't make much progress. hoping to turn some wrenches today

Mine didn't have any issues popping out of gear. I did use a 1350 front "case" with the guts out of a 94 + model 1354 in both cases for the 6 gear planetaries and the later design shift fork which captures the shifting gear differently.

yeah ive got the 1354 with the 6 planetary set in my back case, the shifting mech looks a lot better in that one. Ive asked around to a couple guys that aren't running stops in their shifters and haven't had problems, one guy on TRS said he just shimmed his shifters so they have a bit of preload on them.

didn't get anything done on the bdos yesterday, buddy is moving to Washington so I helped him load up all the parts he had in his garage, his wife made him load that stuff last haha.

the doubler is ready to go in though, I clocked it up so we will see if it fits with the floor as is, might be taking a grinder to my floor this afternoon lol. After talking to Kirby ive decided to do a single crossmember in the stock location, im going to custom make mine with 1/4" plate and some poly bushings that are laying around Erics Shop. after that im going to make a skidplate from some 3/16" tread plate Eric has laying around, with the tread side up lol, not ideal material but the price (free) is right and I can make it work. im just going to put spacers on it so it allows the crossmember to run under the frame rails and turn up to the mounts and then the skid will bolt up under the cmember, it will probably all be about 1/2" below the frame rails.

I really want to get that all done this weeks so I can go on a run with the club this weekend and then the following weekend another club is coming from the other side of the state to run the Saint Anthony sand dunes, id love to go on that run also, we will see how far I get.

And Falling Rock on Memorial Day!

wow thats a beefy mount, we shall see how my stocker holds up, im sure it will be gone fairly soon. I didn't get on the gas to much when the doubler was in before bk I have driveshaft issues.

and yes, falling rock, not that the bdos will do much good in the land of giants...

To continue our conversation here, I also read much about matching material/ design of mounts for the tranny/ engine mounts to avoid over stressing the transmission case. If you build a poly mount for the tranny, it would be a good idea to build some poly mounts for the engine at the same time.

This is actually true if you read about it, but in practice it seems less true.

It is the best idea but I have never broken my trans case or t case. Not a bronco dos of course but I have built a few crossmembers and done the poly on the motor mounts and the stock motor mounts quite a few times.

The way the xmember will be it puts the poly out wide ( similar to the stock mounts) so it should allow a little movement in.

Although Jon and I have talked about overall control of the entire drivetrain and will probably go polly everywhere eventually, right now Jon and I are both in a beggars can't be choosers frame of mind.

I don't think we will have a huge problem with the poly xmember mounts and stock motor mounts but like I said it is best if you are going to use poly one place to use it the other too.

I think I might just eliminate the stock trans mount that is there and just build a replacement out of solid stock. Your right Kirby I should be building the motor mounts out of the same material as the trans mount, for budget reasons right now im gonna have to just stay with what I've got in the engine bay. If I didn't already have access to the 2 ply bushings im going to be using I wouldn't be able to build the new c-member, id have had to stay with the stocker.

I read your thread about the issues you were having with overfilling and having it burp out the breather, I decided that I needed to go get some fittings before I put it back in, its good to know where my breather needs to go and everything. plus I didn't have time to put it in yesterday I ended up taking my wife golfing for mothers day, that was the best gift I've ever given her or myself for mothers day haha. Kirby how much fluid does the doubler unit actually use? I've just been putting a quart in there, thats the amnt I read somewhere goes in the thing, I was just gonna fill it then pull the middle plug and go from there, nice to know the exact amnt that needs to go in there if you know off the top of our head.

well here is Eric with his 2c, im hoping its not going to be a problem, btw Kirby I think you should expect that im gonna come down to Crawlorado and go wheeling within the next year or so, looks like a hell of a good time from your pics.

Jus sayin what I have done.

Yah golfin for mothers day, your a giver man, a true giver.

Glad Im not the only one that picked up on that.
About the fluid, can't you just use a fudge factor of what percent you increased the size and add accordingly?

haha she had a good time, she wants her own set of clubs now, she borrowed my Moms.

yeah well I think that a quart is more than enough, so when I get it filled and in ill pull the middle plug which is the fluid level one, if it runs out ill wait till it is level, if not ill add till it does run out.

That should work. But it there is some concern, you could always use an angle finder that uses fluid and a pointer and find how many degrees your tranny is pointing down.
Then put your T-case on bench with the same angle. Next just take a level at bottom of drain hole and this will show you where the fluid level will be through out the case to make sure all rotating stuff is in fluid. Mainly the front section if in fact it's pointing up at all.
Ok, im bored

got it back together, little fun with my brothers truck in the driveway,

also loaded it up on the trailer to take it to Erics, need to build the crossmember, skidplate and the fenderwells, we have a run this weekend and Eric told more people they can go than he can fit in his rig haha. gotta get moving on this thing. on a sad note it does still have a few leaks, pretty pissed about that, I was VERY careful putting it together. oh well guess its time for "The Right Stuff", but im going to wait till after the run to take it apart.

I bet it did turn some heads. Nice flex, I like the way the front axle was articulated and both rear tires were on the ground. Now for some real action shots.
