Ok....trying to figure out my next mod. Has anyone on here removed the 3rd cat? And if so did it make a difference is power and/or sound? If I can recall correctly there is one behind the downstream O2 sensor. Not sure if it's actually a cat or just a resonator. Since it is after the downstream O2 it would not affect the sensor readings. I'm thinking it would help to improve the flow a little and possibly improve the exhaust sound a bit with the flowmaster 50 series I have on it.

Ive read quite a few posts on here about people doing it, not sure if it was 2nd or 3rd gens though LOL....I cant say from experience on an EX, but my uncle had a Marauder, (whichever year they came out is what he had) and he took the cats off, and it sounded like he had a complete flowmaster exhaust it had such a nice growl

His CEL did come on though from the sensors, plus he had an intake, he put that on first though, that made his light come on for the longest time; then it finally turned off, then he took the cats off and it was on ever since

Then it blew up in the Ford parking lot :'( lol

If I only remove the one behind the downstream O2 sensor the CEL will not come on since it is behind the last sensor. I thought I read some posts on here about people doing this but couldn't find any where they just removed the 3rd cat.

i did it to mine. I also put an electric exhaust cutout where the cat used to be. Now i just flip a switch and get a straight through exhaust.

I've looked into doing this on my 2nd gen (removing the two cats downstream) and the general view among people I've conferred with that you won't gain much in the way of performance or sound unless the cats themselves are plugged and hence restrictive in the first place.

I removed the third cat, aka resonator... and put in a magnaflow and my car POPS like there's no tomorrow whenever I rev the engine.. its a truly unique sound I have to say.

I cant tell you if there was a performance increase due to the removal of the resonator or not but the combo of removing resonator/stockmuffler and adding magnaflow made a noticeable difference.

Also, after installing the muffler, i got a K&N cold air intake and that made the overall noise a lot more throaty and deep.

hope I helped.

Thnx Xeno....I already have a K&N CAI and a Flowmaster 50 series on the stock exhaust so it might make a little bit of a difference in both flow and sound.

Resonator removal doesn't really affect flow. It will affect sound, both inside and outside of the truck.

I thought we were talking about cats. ;)

(2nd gen has 2 extra cats AND a resonator

nah...not cats...gotta leave those on...but i figured the resonator would somehow affect the flow somewhat.

my magnaflow catback system removed the 3rd cat when i installed it...i gained a little bit of power. i think you should invest in some short tube headers + henson tune...you will be most pleased.

I already have a Henson tune and headers seem to run around $600 and that's a little too steep for me...lol

i got mine on sale from explorerexpress for 350...shipped...i just went for the stainless. you could do some steeda pulleys, or some coil packs(my coil packs gave me some nice low end torque).

What kinda coil packs did you get?

I got the granatelli (or GMS) 60,000 volt coil packs.

4.6L bud lol. I have every single bolt on known to man for these trucks. i think its safe to say that i have the fastest N/A 3rd gen explorer on the site, followed closely by limited02's. Im getting into the big boy upgrades now...Heads + cams + blower + 5.3 short block...im probably going to spend around 18 grand in the next couple years on this dream engine.

in anycase. my favorite mods have been. in the following order

Tune
headers
throttle body
Coil packs
Pulleys
Intake manifold
K&N CAI
Magnaflow
E-fan.

I have my third cat removed and it runs PERFECT!!! You may notice a little more pull on the topend as well as a little louder exhaust. There are NO sensors after the third cat so you will be fine. Do it and report back on the performance!!!

Hey Zerodevil, why don't you take yours to the track and see if you can get that number one N/A spot? I am shooting for it this fall;D

your on, i just have to get my bud to come out and race me in his silverado.

How is the new motor running? I remember you had some tranny trouble as well? When you do race it, TAKE OUT whatever you don't need and be running on gas fumes:D

How fast exactly do you think your running zerodevil? I highly doubt your number one, which is a 14.81@89.79mph. I would wager there are more than a few trucks in the high 14's to mid 15's. But none of them have posted any hard numbers, and until then it's just talk. And as long as it stays that way I'll keep holding my #3 spot.

you havea gen 3? i said fastest n/a Gen 3 on the site lol.

Limited, ill take the 4 hours to remove all the seats/ the front drive shaft and the passenger headlight...im going to give you a run for your money.
