Prior to this weekend, I was leaking coolant as if I was a water truck. In addition when this problem reared it's ugly head, I noticed that my gauge starting jumping quickly from cold to hot and back. Replaced both upper and lower intake
manifold gaskets along with thermostat and sending unit.

Yes, the lower man gasket was the culprit. No more leaks !

Anyway, before the recent leak and erratic gauge showed up, my temp was very consistant with the needle staying around the O&R in "normal". Now with the new thermostat, it sits between the R&M going down the highway but as I start up a climb it raises between the M&A.

I saw in other messages that you need to make sure
that when installing the thermostat, the little
weeping hole on the stat needs to be in a 12 o-clock position. Is this true ? Does it warrant me going back confirming it's location ? I got this stat from a local ford dealer.

Also What about burping the radiator ? I heard that it's possible I may have some air in my coolant lines which may cause the needle to jump around. How do you burp (belch) the air bubbles out of the coolant lines ?

Thanks

I just went thru the same thing...New thermo was flaky.
I drained the cooling sys and pressure tested with the drain open to force out bubbles. Gauge is still between n-m but no other probs so I'm not worried. I'm jst happy that's the only problem after doing the manifold.

The Air Hole has to be at the 12 o'clock position so that you will NOT have to "Burp" the system. So if the hole is not at 12 o'clock, go back and rotate it untill it is.... then you'll be all set.

about your gauge starting jumping quickly from cold to hot and back, I would check the connection to your Temp. sending unit, You may need to replace the unit.

My 93 with 103000 is losing a bit of coolant very slowly. I recently replaced the radiator, cap and hoses but it seems like I've lost a bit of fluid in the last 2K miles. What is considered normal loss for an explorer ie how much should I lose from the cold fill line over what period of time? Thanks, rc
