I've been browsing threads for 2 days, here is the Flowmaster I think I need...
FLO-42441
http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?target=/egnsearch.asp&N=400238

There is also a FLO-42443, but I don't see the differance between the 1 and 3...

I know I will need to have a shop install a "Y" pipe at the inlet end for my application, if my brain is working right after all the threads I read through.

how much is a custom Y pipe usually

and ebay is a lot cheaper on mufflers

The "Y" don't need to be custom. According to the shop they have a wide variety and they are sure one will fit. They have done 2 other Xs with the SOHC, but with Raven mufflers instead of Flowmaster. Got quoted $235 if i bring the muffler in.
Through Summitt I can get a waranty and acording to Flowmaster they will not honor thier waranty if the muffler was purchased off e-bay or second hand. Has to be a established Flowmaster dealer they said.

that price sounds kinda high for just getting a pipe thrown on there...are you doing duals or what? i supplied my own muffler (albeit i have an ohv so no y pipe) they put on a 2.25" muffler back tail pipe, 2 hangers and a tip for $68. as for the warrenty, the ebay price is probably less than half the price youll pay elsewhere...and besides, what could go wrong with your muffler???

Difference between the 1 and 3, is that the 1 is an offset in, center out. The 3 is an offset in, offset out. (Refering to where on the case the inlet and outlets are).

You will need a y-pipe, but I would shop around because $235 is pretty high especially since your bringing in your own muffler.

Personally, I would not worry about a warrenty on the muffler. Flowmaster will be the longest lasting part of your exhaust most likely. I would check with the exhaust shop to see if they warrenty their piping and welding. If that stuff rusts through within a year you'll want them to cover it.

Thats just the first shop I talked to. A guy on base told me about them and I was just getting prices. They do waranty thier work for the life of the vehicle and will also mount the muffler as far back as possible to help with the cab noise(this appies more to trucks than an X).
I'm not even sold on the Flowmaster yet, a couple guys on base have the Raven mufflers and they all sound good. There is just SO much confusion about the type of Flowmaster to use that I wanted to make sure I was looking at the right one.
Thanks for the input and for showing me the diff between the 1 and 3... I didn't even notice that.

Hey man cant go wrong with Flowmaster, everyone has it.

As for Y Pipes, do they reduce flow greatly? I wanted to do the Super 40 flowmasters...would a Y pipe with 2.25 inlet/outlet flow decent for a 4.0?
