Thoughts on noise coming from rear

Hi,

I have a 2005 XLT V6 with an annoying buzz coming from the rear. Everyone that rides in the truck says it sounds like its coming from the rear drivers side. The only thing I can compare the sound to is driving down the highway and a lifted truck with huge tires goes flying by (that buzzing sound). I have also noticed it lets up a wee bit when turning left around corners. Bearing or worse? Thanks.

Sounds like it could be the bearing. But I am somewhat of an explorer virgin as I've only had my X since February. Try jacking the rear up and seeing if you can move the wheels from left to right and up and down. Should be no play. Also check the axle shafts, both sides, and drive shaft for play. Sorry I couldn't be more help. But be patient grasshopper for if you post it they will come.

Does it do it while it's sitting still (idling) as well? could be fuel pump if so.

there is a TSB for a rear drone noise. It has something to do with the driveshaft. I seen it posted here before, so it should be easy enough to find with searching.

really sounds like a bearing problem, thats where i would start there easy enough to replace and not to expensive if u dont let it go on too long and make matters much worse.

It only does it while moving, and it sure sounds like its coming from the corner. I've been reading up on the bearing replacement, I did the front drivers side already, but I was wondering do I need to buy a hub AND a bearing or can I just get a bearing and have it pressed in. If I buy the hub assembly, is the bearing already pressed in?

i think on the 2005 models u will have to buy the assembly (hub and bearing) and i believe it comes with the bearing pressed in (but dont quote me, my exp is on older rides)

On the rears the bearing needs to be pressed into the knuckle and then the hub (the part that has the studs to hold your wheels on) needs to be pressed into the bearing.

This is what you get when you purchase a rear hub "assembly:

Its not like the front that has everything pressed in and you bolt in the new one (its much harder then that though!)

Here is a thread about replacing rears, he brought the knuckles that were removed from the car to have the bearings pressed out and new ones pressed in.

You could try changing the rear diff fluid to 74W145 synthetic to see if that might cure the noise. There is a TSB to do this due to differential "whine".

miker is correct, but I have done both of my rears and I got the kits without the new hub. I just re-used the old one. The kit without the hub is significantly cheaper. If you don't have access to a press, or if you dont want to try to press it, I would suggest removing the knuckle and just bringing everything to a machine shop. I had my local NAPA do the press work on my most recent one and they charged me $90.
