Hello all,

I'm new to the site and the 4x4 world and have little knowledge regarding engines and what not as it is, but am sure that when you step on the gas, isn't the throttle suppose to open 100% if flooring it?

What I have noticed on my newly accuired 1992 exlporer eddie bauer edition 4x4 is that when giving it gas, there's not too much power and takes some time to accelerate. Deffinately not what i expected from a 4.0 v6. Now i know the specs of the engine and giving the wieght of the vehicle didn't expect it to "launch", I thought it had more kick than this!

I just replaced the Spark plugs, wires and added a 4" MAF adapter with cone air filter and deffinately felt an increase but noticed that when giving the throttle pressure it only opens up about 50%, but there is still room for the throttle opener to be pushed back more (by hand). Is this normal or is there just too much slack. Also when at idle, the throttle is completely closed and only letting in air through a very small hole in the throttle opener plate (round thing that regulates the intake flow haha).

sorry for the long post, just trying to get some info and thanks!;)

there is a throttle cable mod with zip ties, helps compensate for the slack in the throttle cable. After years of being used the cable gets strentched. You can try doing that. there is a thread on that somewhere on this forum. Take just a few minutes to do it and it may help you.

Thanks Explorer1995, I've read some of those threads while using the search engine but not sure that would solve the problem. I will post some pics later to show what I am talking about because the throttle cable would need to be pulled back up to 50% more to open at full throttle.

Thank you though, but i could be wrong?

Here's what I am talking about, not sure if the ziptie method would fix this, or would it?
Thanks again!

i dont think it will help it that much, but it's worth a try it's pretty much a free thing so may has well start there. maybe the cable may just be too worn out.

Try the zip tie thing and post some results.

cool, thanks again & for the quick response!

Anyone else have any suggestions just incase?

welcome

Update, just did the zip tie mod and deffinately fixed the throttle issue. I only needed to use 1 zip tie and now throttle opens 100%!!!

Still feel it needs more power, but i guess i'm expecting a lot from a 155 hp v6 hahaha. Next few mods include; change oil filter, fuel filter & hopefully a flowmaster exhaust or anyone have any other suggestions as far as an exhaust system? all need to change the catalytic converter!

But thanks soo much EXPLORER1995!!!

it's not a problem at all, i did it to mine awhile back and worked great. I am glad it worked for you also!

as far as re doing the exhaust, it would prob help restore hp to the factory but as far has an increase I am not sure. I think ppl have gone back and forth on that issue. it would def sound alot better. I had a flowmaster 40 series muffle put on, I just need to replace my cats since they are old, may help the flow alittle better.

i want it more for the sound than anything and the increase in power will help too. Just that it smells like exhaust fumes a little from the outside passanger side. I looked under the truck to see that the muffler was rusting away, all stock under there so needs replacing.

will post up pictures of the intake mod in a few minutes :)

The MAF adapter i bought is Spectre Performance 4" ford small MAF adapter part number 8145 from Pepboys for $20 &

Spectre air filter Part number 8132 for $20-30 (don't remember how much) lol.

yeah then i would prob replace it, prob will end up rusting through soon anyways.

that looks sharp!!!!! did help with some increase in power at all?

that with the spark plugs and ignition cables changed i felt a good increase of between 5-10hp i'm guessing. Better throttle response (better now with the zip tie in place lol) and less shake on the fwy at 70mph, just smoother!

Well i may just have to do that to mine also then :)

definately would recommend it and for about $50 and 10 minutes of your time, can't beat it!

Now i have to get some piping from throttle to MAF. may use the universal pieces from autozone or something but have to hold off on those for now :)

I agree, for that price! it's would be hard to beat! I didnt notice too much dif after changing the plugs and wires and igntion coil, but I took out my throttle body to replace the ect sensor and cleaned out the carbon in the throttle body and that's when i noticed abit more of a smoother ride, it could be better but hell it's an 95 that i bought for 1900$ with 106,x.. miles haha it's a working progress :)
