Hello all,

This morning on my way to class, I was going down the highway and my O/D off light started flashing and the transmission wouldn’t kick down into final gear. This is something that would happen like once every three months or so and I would just pull over, turn the truck on and off and get on my way. However, this week it has happened a bunch and as of last morning it happens every time I drive more than five minutes. From research on this thread, I know I am throwing a transmission code. Fluid level seems good and color is decent. Anyone have any helpful information as to what is going on?

Thank you

I’m sorry. I should’ve stated this in the first post. I have a 2001 sport Trac 2WD

Get a reading on which code it is, could be as simple as a single bad solenoid on the valve body. Or a servo bore, see Symptoms & Solution

flashing OD light = limp mode. This is designed to get you to the nearest dealership/repair shop
You should notice the trans is shifting more firm then normal because it is running at increased line pressure during the flashing OD light
You need to get the codes scanned from memory and write down the codes, try not to drive it while the OD light is flashing

Thanks for the replies y’all. I am sending it to my mechanic (trustworthy with fair prices) to get the code read on Monday and will try to keep the driving to a minimum. Thanks for the help!

UPDATE

Got back from our mechanic today. He checked out the transmission and checked the code, he then preformed a $150 transmission service in which he replaced the transmission fluid and added Lucas transmission additive. The code was a P0741, and the transmission is still the same. It is driveable with 4 gears and as bad as it might be to do, I’ll have to drive it for now as I’m between jobs. He quoted $3000 to replace the tranny with a new one, but unless anyone on this forum has any insight for me on the code, I’ll either pursue another vehicle or do some sort of engine swap because I’m starting to get the timing chain rattle too. Thank y’all for your help
